Presentation for Sonoma County SysAdmins coming up

On June 12 I will be giving a presentation on Drupal to the Sonoma County Systems Administrators group.

It's been a while since I have given a presentation and I think I can come up with some interesting stuff for the group. As they are a systems administrators group, I will be approaching this from a SysAdmin point of view, not so much a development point of view.

Developing a site using Drupal is only part of the fun, long term sustainable maintenance is the real goal. Drupal is a very powerful tool that lets you communicate. Maintaining that tool after you've invested time and personalization into it, is an important part of implementing your site.

While it's true, I do this as a hobby, professionally I am paid to implement and maintain sustainable Enterprise solutions. There's is not a lot of documentation on this as Drupal is only part of your web sites eco-system so it's assumed you will learn this from the various sites documentation. However, with the influx of power users and people just converting over to database driven sites, they may not realize that they need to do some research off Drupal.org as well to maintain and plan for their sites longevity.

What is a drupal.org user?

People at various times, often to justify their position, throw this phrase around….

Must make things easier for the user / end user / whatever.

What is a user of Drupal? From a perspective of drupal.org, a user is someone who installs and configures Drupal. This is not the end user of a given site or implementation. This is the person who builds a Drupal site. This is an important distinction as there are several avenues for making something more accessible to a given target user base. So let's think about it,

Interesting about direct questions

If you are going to send someone direct email asking about something with the community, don't expect a response if your domain blocks email responses by claiming I am sending spam. Recently someone sent me a direct email asking for more specific insight in something. I tried to reply only to discover I was evidently sending spam.

Message: 554 SpamBouncer identified SPAM, message permanently rejected (#5.3.0).

So if you are sent me a message asking for something and I never replied back, Maybe I tried.

Designer Eye for the Geek Guy/Gal video up

Well, it took a little longer then I hoped but the video of Steven Wittens design presentation is up on Google video's now.

You can see it here. Don't forget to grab the slides of his site.

One video on google

I finally got one of the video's I took uploaded to video.google.com. Karen Stevenson's Date + Calendar presentation. It should appear in a few hours. I will update with a direct link and tag it oscms2007 as soon as it appears public and I figure out how. Onto the next one.

OSCMS2007 rocked

Ok, so I'm late, I've been busy. Simply put OSCMS2007 and the Drupal con afterwards was just a blast, even with the accident on Friday.
