Yet another IBM article

Teach me not to check IBM's website for a bit. Dries has mentioned the hosting and deploying articles. These are good for an introduction to using VMWare server and other considerations for hosting your site. Of more interest is their article on Using taxonomies in Drupal. A nice overview on various ways to use and leverage taxonomy capabilities in Drupal.

Sacramento/Davis CA Drupal meetup Dec 15th 6pm PST

So Jonathan is local to me and sent me an email reminding me that we never get together. So, now we're going to get together. Any other Drupal folks in and around the area are welcome to stop on by. We're not married to the venue so feel free to suggest a different one.

Mentioned here on drupal.org and here on upcoming.org

If we get enough interest we'll try for something regular off groups.drupal.org. Didn't want to make a group if there wasn't enough local interest to drive it.

Friends get friends to use Drupal

A friend of mine uses Drupal for his personal site. He seems to have had a lot of fun with it (which is good as he sites next to me at work and I talked him into using it). So when his wife mentioned a desire for a site to offload phone calls from parents about work assignments he asked what Drupal modules I thought would be useful. Based on the inital description I tossed out some module ideas and he took it from there. His server suffered a slight(large) hardware failure right before launch so we salvaged backups and moved it to my box.

I got him to document what he did ala IBM Developer works style from a hobbyists perspective.

Major Drupal.org project module update installed

Derek has gotten the first phase of a project module installed on Drupal.org. This will be a big change for people.

The biggest change will be in module version numbers. All those that wanted this, should take the time to contribute to Derek's work. Getting here was a very complex and involved project that took a lot of time and hard work.

Developers should take note of updated docs for using the new release system and CVS.

Drupal 5.0 changelog

So, the first Drupal 5.0 Beta release is here. When people ask what's changed some are referred to the Changelog. This is an important tool in tracking major changes in Drupal versions. But for those not following along it really only contains a brief snippet of what has changed. What has changed under the hood is pretty substantial and this time we have pretty new default theme as well which makes for a much more dramatic first impression. To get here a lot of work in the past two versions has happened to pave the way.

I'm going to run through my memories of what the various lines in the Changelog.txt may mean for the average site builder.

Both IE7 gold and FireFox 2 are out

FireFox 2 is out.  It says so on their web site.  So is Internet Explorer 7 gold and it says so on their website as well.  Both have their strengths.  IE7 for running in corporate environments where you are not allowed to have a different browser or for the folks for whom the computer is tolerated and not something to spend a lot of time on.  (Yes there are people like that).
