Folder item counts with PFDAVAdmin

I learned this neat trick with PFDAVAdmin last year. We had a performance issue with our Exchange servers and one thing I learned was that people not in cached mode with high item counts in their folders affected everyone on the servers performance. If you only had one or two, then not so bad, if you had a lot then not so good. You can identify potential people with the ExMon tool and Performance Troubleshooting Analyzer. This is a server side part of an earlier Outlook tips post where you can find the folder item count recommended numbers.
So, how to identify people with high item counts in their folders?
- Launch PFDAVAdmin
- On the File menu, select Connect
- In the 'Connect' dialog box
- enter the name of the Exchange server for the mailboxes
- Check 'Authenticate as currently logged on user" check box
- Select "All mailboxes" under Connection and click OK
- On the Tools menu, select Options
- Check the "Enable logging to file"
- Leave UNCHECKED "Enable extended logging"
- On the Tools menu, select Export Properties
- The "PropertyExportForm" will now appear
- Select "All folders"
- Create an Output File such as
c:\logs\ItemCount.txt
- Check the properties to export:
- PR_CONTENT_COUNT : 0x36020003
- PR_DISPLAY_NAME : 0x3001001E
- PR_FOLDER_PATHNAME : 0x66B5001E
- Click on the OK button and wait for a while depending on the number of mailboxes and folders. When it's done it will say 100% so just close the dialog box and exit PFDAVAdmin
- Open the text file and sort columns
